“The close association between “”firefighter”” and “”cancer”” has intensified over the past decade. Current
research focuses on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), alongside the usual chemicals
encountered during firefighting (e.g., polyaromatic hydrocarbons, phthalates, phenols). PFAS chemicals
are present in aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) used to extinguish fires involving flammable
substances, as well as in the dust and air at fire scenes and stations. Additionally, firefighter turnout
gear, designed to provide heat and chemical protection, contains fluorine-based water and oil repellent
(DWR) chemicals and fluoropolymer moisture barriers. Consequently, concerns have emerged
regarding firefighters’ exposure to PFAS chemicals from their own turnout gear.”
