In April 2013, the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN) convened experts from diverse backgrounds to address the growing concern about cancer risks in the fire service. The outcome was the first comprehensive white paper focusing on firefighter cancer, which significantly influenced policy, education, and practices nationwide.
A key part of that document was the “12 Immediate Actions” to reduce cancer risks. These steps became foundational in shaping how departments manage exposure to carcinogens and protect their personnel. Though the list may have evolved slightly over time, many of the original steps are still widely recommended and have scientific backing showing measurable health benefits.
